Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) successfully averted a potentially disastrous fuel tanker explosion after a road accident at Wassa Kwabeng on Saturday, March 13.

According to the GNFS, firefighters from the Asankrangwa Fire Station responded swiftly after a DAF fuel tanker with registration number GT 1921-18 overturned in the middle of the town along the Asankrangwa–Sefwi Bekwai road.

The tanker, which was transporting about 18,000 litres of petrol, began spilling its contents continuously after the accident, raising fears of a possible explosion in the densely populated community.

The fire crew, led by Assistant Divisional Officer (ADO II) Sylvester Appiah Kubi, quickly deployed a smothering technique using a foam compound to contain the fuel spill and prevent the highly flammable substance from igniting.

As part of safety measures, residents living in nearby houses were evacuated and cautioned against the use of naked flames in the area. Traffic along the busy road was also temporarily diverted to ensure public safety.

Later in the day, the spilled fuel was safely transferred into another tanker, bringing the situation under control.

Personnel from the Ghana Police Service were also deployed to the scene to provide security and assist with traffic control, preventing residents from attempting to siphon fuel from the overturned tanker.

Meanwhile, the driver of the tanker and his mate, who sustained minor injuries in the crash, were rescued and rushed to the Kwabeng Clinic for medical treatment.

Authorities say investigations are underway to determine the cause of the accident.

The statement was issued by the Western Regional Public Relations Office of the Ghana National Fire Service on Sunday, March 15, 2026.
