Maxwell Oppong, a 29-year-old farmer from Ajumako to Breman Essiam in the Central Region, is currently serving a two-year, six-month jail term at the Winneba Local Prison.

He has revealed that going to prison has been a blessing in disguise, helping him transform his life.

“I went to steal a man’s phone in Ajumako. It was an Itel phone. I was with a friend at the time who showed me the phone and I took it.

“After we stole it, people realised we were the only ones around, so they chased us, beat us, and sent us to the police station. My friend was given a six-month jail term, but I was sentenced to two years and six months,” he recounted during an interview with Crime Check Foundation.

Maxwell admitted that before prison, he had developed habits that could have destroyed his life. He had been smoking for about three years but with the discipline and structure in prison, he has been able to quit.

“If not for God bringing me to prison, I wouldn’t have been able to stop those things. Coming here has really helped me.

“Maybe I would have been dead or living a miserable life by now. In prison, you can’t insult anyone; there is so much discipline. I have learned a lot here, and when I go out, I will use this training to live a better life,” he said.
