The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has announced the immediate suspension of new applications for selected categories of gold buying licences as part of sweeping reforms aimed at modernising Ghana’s gold trading regime.
In a press release issued on Monday, February 16, the Board stated that the directive affects fresh applications for Tier 1 and Tier 2 Buying Licences, as well as the Self-Financing Aggregator Licence. The suspension takes effect immediately.
According to GoldBod, the Aggregator Licence will be the only gold trading licence category open for new applications during this period.
However, the Board assured stakeholders that all applications submitted prior to the announcement will continue to be processed without disruption.
“The Board will expedite the review and issuance of pending buying licensing applications, provided applicants meet all regulatory requirements and have fulfilled the necessary fee obligations,” the statement said.
GoldBod explained that the move forms part of broader measures to reform the national gold buying framework. The reforms are designed to enhance transparency, strengthen regulatory compliance, improve gold traceability, and ensure greater value retention within Ghana’s gold trading ecosystem.
Reaffirming its commitment to stakeholders across the gold value chain, the Board said it is working toward establishing a robust, accountable, and internationally competitive gold trading regime that safeguards Ghana’s national interest. Further updates on the reform process and revised licensing framework are expected in due course.
