  • The incident may test NATO’s resolve and trigger further escalation.

Tensions between NATO and Russia have escalated sharply following reports that Russian drones entered Polish airspace during a wave of overnight strikes on Ukraine. The alleged breach has triggered alarm in Washington, where lawmakers from both parties are weighing in with starkly different tones.

Senator Chris Murphy, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, described the incident as “incredibly serious” if confirmed, but urged caution. He noted Poland’s proximity to Ukraine has repeatedly placed it in the crosshairs of the war, and stressed the need for verified intelligence before escalating diplomatic or military responses.

On the other side of the aisle, Republican Representative Joel Wilson of South Carolina took a more aggressive stance, calling the drone incursion an “act of war.” Wilson, who sits on both the Foreign Services and Armed Services Committees, urged President Donald Trump to impose sweeping sanctions aimed at crippling Russia’s military capabilities and to arm Ukraine with weapons capable of striking deep into Russian territory.

The timing of the incident is politically charged. It comes just days after President Trump hosted Polish President Karol Nawrocki at the White House, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to NATO’s eastern flank and discussed joint defense initiatives.

Poland has responded by scrambling NATO and national aircraft, closing multiple airports, and placing its air defense systems on high alert. The country’s military confirmed that drone-type objects had violated its airspace, prompting a live operation to identify and neutralize the threat.

As the situation unfolds, the White House is expected to issue a formal response. The incident could test the limits of NATO’s collective defense framework and reignite debates over how far member states should go in confronting Russian aggression beyond Ukraine’s borders.
