To position Ghana’s cash crops and fully tap their economic potential, Cabinet has approved the establishment of two new cashew factories in the Bono and Bono East regions.

According to the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, the move forms part of the government’s efforts to revive the Komenda Sugar Factory.

She explained that the factory, which was commissioned in 2016 to serve as a major agro-industrial enclave with the capacity to process 1,250 metric tonnes of sugarcane daily, has been left abandoned for years.

Speaking in Parliament on February 17, 2026, Ofosu-Adjare noted that the factory’s inactivity has significantly affected job creation in the region and caused great economic losses.

“Despite its enormous potential to create jobs and stimulate economic growth in the Central Region and beyond, years of technical, financial, and operational challenges have stalled its full operations,” she said.

She added that her Ministry is currently working on a comprehensive report submitted by an Interim Management Committee (IMC), which was established by the government following her visit to Komenda to engage stakeholders.

“Mr Speaker, given the importance that the government attaches to the Komenda Sugar Factory, the Ministry has prioritised the engagement of a Transactional Advisor to package the factory and secure a strategic investor to operationalise the factory and farms in the 2026 budget,” she added.

She also revealed that the government has secured land for sugarcane cultivation to support the production of refined sugar under the Feed the Industry Programme, with assistance from the Chief of Komenda.
