Government has reiterated its determination to expand electricity access nationwide, with plans to increase coverage from the current 89.03 per cent to almost 100 per cent by the year 2030.
The Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Richard Gyan-Mensah, said the objective is a key pillar of Ghana’s development agenda, as reliable power supply remains critical to economic growth and improved living standards, particularly in remote and underserved communities.
“Government remains resolute in achieving universal access to electricity, moving beyond the current 89.03 per cent access rate to about 99.9 per cent by 2030,” Mr Gyan-Mensah stated.
He made the remarks during the commissioning of new electrification projects for Awurahae and Sapor in the Asuogyaman Constituency of the Eastern Region.
The two communities, despite being located close to the Akosombo Hydropower Dam, had lived without electricity for several decades.
Providing details of the projects, the Deputy Minister explained that Awurahae, a fishing and aquaculture community with an estimated population of 200 to 300 people, was connected through a 2.4-kilometre network extension from Kudi Junction.
The project, which began in 2024 and was completed in 2025, faced significant challenges due to difficult terrain.
According to him, the works involved the installation of a 100 kVA distribution transformer, the construction of a medium-voltage network using 120 sqmm aluminium conductors, and a low-voltage network with ABC cables, at a total cost of GH¢3.05 million.
Mr Gyan-Mensah also commended the Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman and Deputy Minister for Finance, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, for his leadership and advocacy, describing his contribution as instrumental to the successful delivery of the electrification projects.
