The President, John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to introduce the Divestiture of Public Property Bill, which would require parliamentary approval for the sale or lease of government assets, including lands and state enterprises.
This move, he stated, aims to curb the undervalued sale of public lands and ensure transparency in government transactions.
“Government will soon introduce legislation that makes it mandatory for Parliamentary approval before any government asset or property is leased out or sold including lands and state enterprises”, he noted.
Giving the State of the Nation Address in Parliament today, President Mahama highlighted that, the proposed legislation would prevent the Lands Commission from processing public land transactions without parliamentary ratification, putting an end to unchecked sales of government assets.
He also emphasized that, this measure is necessary to address the rampant sale and mortgaging of government assets without public oversight highlighting cases where government land was sold at low prices and resold at significantly higher values.
