Recent reports from Kessben TV have raised alarm over the ongoing illegal mining activities, also known as galamsey, in the Jimira Forest Reserve, a situation that contradicts the government’s previous claims of success in reclaiming such areas.
Journalist Erastus Asare Donkor, from Multimedia Group, has revealed that illegal mining is still rampant in Compartment 31 of the reserve, located between Bonteaso and Adobewura.
Armed miners have been operating in the area for several weeks, digging for gold and causing widespread environmental destruction.
Heavy machinery, including excavators, was spotted at the site some weeks ago, and despite notifying the relevant authorities, no serious action has been taken.
Instead, the number of illegal miners and mining machines has increased, pointing to the worsening state of the situation.
This development is particularly alarming because the Jimira Forest Reserve was one of the areas the government claimed to have successfully reclaimed from illegal miners.
