Economist and Professor at the University of Ghana, Prof. Patrick Asuming, says the Mahama administration has performed strongly in stabilising the economy during its first year in office, even though progress on the implementation of flagship government programmes has been limited.
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Wednesday, Prof. Asuming explained that the slow rollout of major initiatives is not unusual for a new administration and should be viewed within the context of the government’s early days in office.
According to him, Ghanaians may not yet have seen significant progress in the implementation of flagship programmes and policy initiatives, but this, he noted, is understandable.
“It is the first year of government, so perhaps we can cut them some slack. It takes time to put an administration together before you can begin implementing your own programmes,” he said.
Prof. Asuming, however, commended President John Dramani Mahama for prioritising macroeconomic stability, describing the government’s performance in this area as impressive.
“In terms of stabilising the economy, the President has done extremely well,” he stated.
He noted that while the President has repeatedly spoken about laying a strong foundation for long-term growth, there remains substantial work to be done in that regard.
“When it comes to laying the foundation, there is still quite a lot of work to be done. But for a first year, in terms of stabilising the macroeconomic environment, the government has done well,” Prof. Asuming added.
