Green for Change Ghana (GCG), a Ghanaian environmental non-governmental organization committed to working with communities to promote sustainable environmental practices, has been honored with the Outstanding Service in Empowering Communities for Climate Adaptation Award at the 2026 Ghana Development Awards, held at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra on March 5, 2026.
The Ghana Development Awards, organized by Business Executive Ghana under the theme “Celebrating Excellence in Nation-Building and Economic Recovery,” recognizes individuals and institutions whose work significantly contributes to Ghana’s socio-economic development and strengthens the resilience of communities across the country.
Green for Change Ghana was recognized for its outstanding contribution to helping vulnerable communities adapt to the effects of climate change through landscape restoration, climate-smart agriculture, renewable energy solutions, and sustainable livelihood programs.
The organization, which has been working with rural communities across Ghana, especially in the northern ecological landscape, focuses on promoting effective environmental practices and policies that benefit both people and the planet.
Its interventions include practical conservation activities aimed at protecting important ecological habitats while strengthening the capacity of communities to cope with climate change and other environmental threats.
Speaking to the media after receiving the award, the Executive Director of Green for Change Ghana, Mr. John Balankoo Sumbo, expressed gratitude to the organizers and described the recognition as a motivation to expand the organization’s work.
“We are excited to be nominated for this prestigious award, and we thank the organizers of the Ghana Development Awards and the vetting committee for settling on Green for Change Ghana.
This award does not only recognize our work in combating climate change across Ghana, particularly in the northern ecological landscape, but also serves as a motivation to deepen the work we are doing,” he said.
Mr. Sumbo noted that the award is dedicated to rural households, farmers, women, and young people who are most affected by climate change but continue to demonstrate resilience and determination in improving their livelihoods.
“We dedicate this award to our beneficiaries who are at the receiving end of climate change impacts, as well as to our dedicated staff, partners, and donors who support us in achieving our mission of tackling climate change, protecting natural resources, and conserving ecosystems through community-focused initiatives,” he added.
He also called on development partners and donor agencies to collaborate with the organization to scale up its interventions across the country.
“We appeal to donor agencies and partners to work with Green for Change Ghana to expand our impact in renewable energy, restoration, green livelihoods, regenerative agriculture, nature-based solutions, water, sanitation and hygiene, and natural resource conflict management. We are open for collaboration to improve livelihoods and protect the planet.”
The award marks a major milestone for the organization and reinforces its commitment to building resilient communities and promoting sustainable development in Ghana.
