An Accra Circuit Court has handed a five-year prison sentence to 34-year-old John Edem Aggorsu, an electrical technician, after he was found guilty of stealing electrical cables and copper valued at over GH₵182,000 from the Achimota Substation of Gridco Company Limited.
The court concluded that Aggorsu orchestrated the theft with help from Daniel Agyei, a security guard at the facility, who had already been sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to abetting the crime. Agyei was found to have intentionally disabled the CCTV cameras to allow the theft to go undetected.
While Agyei admitted his role early in the process, Aggorsu chose to contest the charges, resulting in a full trial. The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, presented four witnesses to support the case. After evaluating the evidence, the judge dismissed Aggorsu’s plea for lack of a case and instructed him to present a defence. He did so but chose not to call any witnesses.
Ultimately, the court ruled that the prosecution had successfully proven the allegations beyond reasonable doubt.
According to police investigations, the theft came to light on January 14, 2022, when a Gridco engineer, Cyril Mawuli King, and a security supervisor noticed the missing cables and alerted Kotobabi Police. Investigators later apprehended Agyei, who confessed to receiving several payments from Aggorsu via mobile money and cash, including sums of GH₵1,320, GH₵200, and GH₵100.
It was revealed that Aggorsu bribed Agyei to tamper with the CCTV system, enabling him to steal the valuable materials undetected. Aggorsu was also believed to have worked with another accomplice, only identified as Godfred, but refused to assist police in locating him.
The court’s decision marks the end of a case involving betrayal, sabotage, and theft from one of Ghana’s major power installations.
