Founder of the All People’s Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga, has expressed support for the government’s proposal to rename Kotoka International Airport after Ghana’s capital, Accra.

According to a myjoyonline.com report on February 4, 2026, Ayariga argued that naming airports after cities is a standard practice globally and makes it easier for international travelers to identify the country.

“In many countries, for instance in Germany, the airports are named after the names of the cities,” he said.

He added that while he respects the idea of honouring Dr Kwame Nkrumah for his contributions to Ghana’s development, naming the airport after the city would better serve national branding and international recognition.

“The airport is the gateway to Ghana. When you mention Accra International Airport, everybody knows that Ghana’s capital is Accra; it makes sense,” he explained.
