He Thought He Got Away With Murder—But 50 Years Later, Justice Caught Up

He Thought He Got Away With Murder—But 50 Years Later, Justice Caught Up

In a landmark judgment that has stunned the UK, a 92-year-old man has been handed a life sentence with a minimum of 20 years behind bars for the rape and murder of a woman in Bristol more than half a century ago.

Ryland Headley was found guilty of killing 32-year-old Louisa Dunne in 1967 inside her home in the Easton area of Bristol. The case, long thought unsolvable, became the oldest cold case ever cracked in the history of modern English policing. With this conviction, Headley also becomes the oldest individual in UK history to be sentenced for murder.

After committing the brutal crime, Headley quietly moved out of the southwest with his family, living in London before eventually settling in Ipswich. But his violent history didn’t end there. A decade later, in 1977, he was arrested for raping two elderly women—aged 79 and 84—in Ipswich. Though initially sentenced to life for those crimes, he served only about two years after a controversial appeal, which reduced his sentence based on claims of sexual frustration in his marriage.

Despite walking free, his past finally caught up with him decades later. In 2023, a breakthrough came when cold case investigators re-tested DNA evidence taken from Dunne’s clothing. That profile matched Headley, whose DNA was already in the national database following an unrelated arrest in 2012.

During sentencing, the judge condemned Headley as a man lacking empathy and remorse. The court heard how the victim suffered immense pain and terror, and the devastating impact on her family was described as lasting through generations. The fact that so many loved ones of the victim died without ever seeing justice was one of the tragic elements highlighted in court.

The prosecution acknowledged that sentencing rules have evolved since the 1960s, but insisted a minimum of 20 years was a fitting reflection of the severity of the crime, even by modern standards. Meanwhile, the defence pleaded for leniency, citing Headley’s age and reportedly calm demeanor since his last release decades ago.

For the victim’s granddaughter, the conviction brought a mix of sorrow and closure. She spoke of the emotional scars her family has carried, the shame they endured, and the sense of loss that persisted for decades. Although many relatives never lived to witness justice being done, she said the moment still marked an important turning point in their long and painful journey.
