Vehicular traffic around the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange in Accra is building up to uncomfortable levels following road diversions that have narrowed traffic lanes in the area.

The congestion is linked to ongoing construction works on sections of the N1 Highway, which extends traffic from the Accra–Tema Motorway towards Dzorwulu.

As part of the traffic management arrangement, vehicles travelling from Madiba towards Independence Avenue have been diverted onto a three-lane road on the opposite side of the carriageway from Accra, effectively reducing the usual six-lane dual carriageway to a single carriageway.

What began as a gradual build-up of traffic on Sunday morning developed into heavy congestion by the evening.

Some motorists who spoke to Graphic Online expressed concern about the situation, particularly with the start of the working week approaching.

“If we are seeing this kind of traffic on a Sunday, you can imagine what it would be on a Monday morning,” a motorist who identified himself as Sampson Arday said.

Drivers said they were hopeful that the situation would ease before the Monday morning rush hour.
