Up to 70–80 percent of Ghanaians rely on herbal medicine in their healthcare, according to Dr Sandra Ashong, President of the Ghana Association of Medical Herbalists.

Speaking at the maiden Natural Health and Wellness Expo 2026 in Accra, Dr Ashong pointed out the importance of collaboration with Indian herbal practitioners, particularly in Ayurveda, to expand treatment options and strengthen the integration of traditional medicine into Ghana’s national healthcare system.

“Up to 70–80 percent of Ghanaians use herbal medicine, and the whole idea is collaboration to see how best we can work with Indian manufacturers of Ayurvedic herbal medicines, just as we have our own traditional herbal systems,” she said.

Ayurveda, a traditional system of medicine that originated in India more than 5,000 years ago, is based on the principle that health depends on balance between the mind, body, and environment.

Ayurvedic practices focus on preventing disease and promoting well-being through diet, lifestyle, herbal remedies, detoxification, yoga, and meditation.

Dr Ashong noted that herbal medicine is increasingly being accepted in Ghana, not only as a traditional remedy but also for its scientific applications.

“Gradually, the public is accepting herbal medicine, not just the indigenous aspect, but the scientific aspect. Conventional medical practitioners are also prescribing certain herbal treatments alongside orthodox medicine,” she said.

Dr Ashong noted that combining Ghanaian herbal knowledge with globally recognized Ayurvedic practices could foster research, innovation, and safer access for patients.

Ghana’s Green Gold: Leveraging herbal medicine for economic growth

“The association prescribes many herbal medicines, but we need options. We must leverage systems from countries like China and especially India. Integrating these products into the national healthcare system would give patients more choices while ensuring safety,” she explained.

The Expo builds on bilateral cooperation between Ghana and India.

In July 2025, during the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)to strengthen cooperation in traditional medicine, with a particular focus on Ayurveda.
