Ghana’s oil revenue slides from $369m to $198m in one year

Ghana earned far less money from crude oil sales in the second half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, according to the Bank of Ghana.

In its latest Semi-Annual Petroleum Funds Report, the central bank said oil lifting receipts between July and December 2025 fell to US$198.25 million, down from US$369.25 million a year earlier.

During the period, the government lifted three crude oil cargoes, two from the Jubilee Field and one from the Sankofa Gye Nyame Field.

The two Jubilee cargoes brought in US$134.55 million, slightly lower than the US$144.20 million earned from similar liftings in late 2024. The Sankofa Gye Nyame cargo earned US$63.70 million, compared to US$68.54 million in the same period last year.

A fourth cargo from the TEN Field, worth US$60.79 million, was also expected in November 2025 but was not received before the end of the year, so it was not counted in the figures.

The Bank of Ghana said the drop in earnings was mainly due to lower global oil prices. Brent crude prices fell from US$66.61 per barrel in June 2025 to US$60.81 by December, reducing how much Ghana earned from each shipment.

However, oil prices have started rising again. In January 2026, Brent crude climbed to US$70.35 per barrel, the highest level in four months, largely due to global tensions.

The Bank of Ghana explained that Ghana’s petroleum revenues are managed through the Petroleum Holding Fund and the Ghana Petroleum Funds, which were created under the Petroleum Revenue Management Act to ensure oil income is properly managed and used for national development.
