Residents of Ho-Dome have renewed their appeal to the Ho Municipal Assembly to put an arrangement in place for the regular clearing of the community refuse dump which keeps swelling rapidly.
That, they said, is necessary to save the area from an epidemic.
The swelling refuse is posing serious health hazards to the area with the emanating stench from the dump which spreads to the houses unbearable.
Some residents say they are considering relocation for health reasons.
As of Wednesday, April 22, 2026, when the Daily Graphic visited the area, the situation was worsening as people from other parts of Ho also conveyed their domestic rubbish to the dump at Ho-Dome.
Worse, the dump is just at the back of the public latrine which is still in use.
This seriously undermines Ho’s status as the Oxygen City of Ghana; a name derived from the long record of high standards of hygiene for which the regional capital is known.
The Assembly Member for the Ho-Dome Wusu Electoral Area, Cherubim Kofi Zigah, who conducted the Daily Graphic round the dump, said the facility was meant to serve only the Wusu and Blisam electoral areas.
“But people from nearby communities also convey their refuse to the dump surreptitiously at night when the janitors are not on duty.
“And once the skip is full and overflowing, they pour the refuse on the ground,” he revealed.
The assembly member said some hotels in the municipality also disposed of their refuse at the dump with impunity.
“Now, we have exhausted every procedure with the assembly for clearing the dump with little success,” Mr Zigah complained.
Zoomlion
He said waste management group, Zoomlion Ghana, which was responsible for clearing the refuse, was now saddled with the challenge of inadequate duty trucks for the task.
When contacted, an official of the Ho Municipal Environmental Office (MEHO), who spoke on grounds of anonymity, said arrangements had been put in place for skip trucks from other districts to assist in clearing refuse in Ho as well.
Attempts by this reporter to engage with officials of the regional office of Zoomlion Ghana did not succeed.
