A routine driving lesson at Assin Fosu in the Central Region turned tragic on Tuesday when a learner driver lost control of a Hyundai truck and fatally struck a mother of four. The victim, 40-year-old Gladys Mensah, died after being crushed and dragged during the incident, which occurred mid-morning on November 18, 2025.

Police investigations indicate that the truck was being used by 26-year-old driver Benjamin Kwarfo to train his conductor, 34-year-old Eric Ackon, when the inexperienced learner suddenly lost control. The vehicle, bearing registration number GR 6146-12, veered off its course near the SDA School at Habitat, a busy suburb of Assin Fosu.

Gladys, who made a living selling second-hand clothing and boxer shorts along the roadside, was in the middle of her usual rounds when the truck swerved toward her. Witnesses recounted a devastating scene in which the vehicle dragged her for several meters before crashing into a nearby house. The impact left the building partially collapsed and caused significant structural damage.

The force of the accident left the woman with severe head injuries and heavy bleeding. She was rushed to the St. Francis Xavier Hospital but did not survive.

Officials from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Wonder Lumor, confirmed that both the supervising driver and the learner have been taken into custody at Assin Fosu as investigations continue. The vehicle involved has been seized for further examination, while the victim’s remains have been placed in the morgue of the St. Francis Xavier Hospital.

Residents, still shaken by the accident, have called for urgent safety measures around the damaged building, warning that the weakened structure poses a serious threat to passersby.
