A 61-year-old fisherman from Peru, Máximo Napa Castro, has defied the odds after spending 95 days adrift in the Pacific Ocean. His journey, which began as a routine fishing trip, turned into a desperate fight for survival after his boat was thrown off course by severe weather.
Castro had left Marcona, a coastal town in southern Peru, on December 7, intending to return within two weeks. However, just ten days into his trip, rough seas disrupted his course, leaving him stranded far from land. Despite efforts by his family and search teams, he remained lost for over three months.
His ordeal ended last Wednesday when an Ecuadorian fishing patrol located him approximately 680 miles from the coast. Severely dehydrated and weak, he was quickly brought to safety.
During his time at sea, Castro had to adapt to extreme conditions. He sustained himself by collecting rainwater, but food quickly became scarce. With no other options, he resorted to eating whatever was available, including insects, birds, and, in the later days, turtles. In the final stretch of his journey, he endured 15 days without any food at all, surviving only on water.
His family, though hopeful, had started to fear the worst. While some held onto faith, others struggled to accept the possibility that he might never return. Against all expectations, he made it back, grateful for a second chance at life.
Castro’s survival stands as a testament to human resilience and determination, highlighting both the unpredictability of nature and the extraordinary will to live.
