Ingoldmells beach in Lincolnshire is giving holidaymakers with disabilities a new reason to smile thanks to beach wheelchairs that allow them to access sand and sea like never before.

Jo Whitehouse, a 52-year-old triathlete and former Channel swimmer, hired one this summer and described the experience as incredible. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2002, she said being able to feel the sea again brought her to her “happy place” and had her grinning uncontrollably.

Another beneficiary, Andrew Boam, 31, who cannot walk or talk, was overjoyed when his mother wheeled him onto the sand. His laughter and excitement brought tears to his mother’s eyes, highlighting the profound impact these wheelchairs have on families.

The charity Beach Ability Lincolnshire currently operates seven specialized wheelchairs and a walker at Ingoldmells beach, free of charge. Plans are underway to expand the service to two additional resorts by March 2026, working with local councils to ensure full beach accessibility.

Lincolnshire County Council praised the initiative, noting that improved access allows families with disabilities to fully enjoy seaside visits together, enhancing tourism and inclusivity in the county.
