Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, better known as Nana Agradaa, is now serving a 15-year prison sentence after a Ghanaian court found her guilty of masterminding a fraudulent scheme masked as a spiritual event. Her conviction stemmed from a 2022 incident where she falsely claimed to possess supernatural powers to multiply money.
During a heavily publicized broadcast on her TV station and social media, Agradaa promoted an all-night church event at her Heaven Way Champion International Ministry, promising attendees they would receive multiplied sums of money in exchange for cash offerings. She displayed large bundles of cash to convince viewers the money was real and ready to be distributed.
Victims travelled from across the country, many bringing their life savings, believing they would receive tenfold returns as advertised. At the event, participants were told to form groups and contribute specific amounts — starting from GHS1,000. In return, each group was promised tens of thousands of cedis.
However, none of the promises were fulfilled. Agradaa collected the money and vanished, leaving hundreds stranded and financially devastated. While only six victims filed official complaints, investigators believe many more were defrauded that night.
The court found that Agradaa deliberately used deception under the cover of religious leadership to defraud the public. Her claims of “money doubling” were deemed false and exploitative, targeting vulnerable individuals with promises of instant financial relief.
She was convicted on six criminal counts: one for charlatanic advertisement and five for defrauding by false pretences. After confirming she was not pregnant, the judge imposed the full sentence of 15 years with hard labour, citing the gravity of her actions and the widespread impact on her victims.
The ruling is being praised as a clear message that spiritual scams disguised as religious practices will not go unpunished in Ghana.
