Mustapha Suleiman, a 29-year-old man, sparked outrage after reportedly insulting the Asantehene and Asantehemaa during the Dote Yie ceremony held for the late Nana Asantehemaa’s family. The incident prompted his family to appear before the Asuofua Traditional Council to apologize for the embarrassment their relative caused.
Nana Barnie Ahenkan, Queenmother of the Asuofua Traditional Area, confirmed that the council summoned Suleiman’s family because he falsely claimed to be a native of the community—a claim not recognized by residents. Speaking to the media, Nana Barnie noted that the family expressed deep remorse and presented a traditional apology, acknowledging the trouble Mustapha’s actions had caused the Asuofua community and his own family.
She also highlighted that the community is already grappling with robbery and indecent behavior among youth, and Suleiman’s conduct worsened these concerns. As part of the traditional fine, the family offered two sheep and Schnapps, aiming to deter similar misconduct in the future. Nana Barnie warned that insults toward elders and chiefs would not be tolerated.
Otumfuo Twafoa, or Anwomahene Nana Fri Bonsi II, stressed that Mustapha Suleiman is not a native of Asuofua or any associated community. He criticized the apparent decline in respect for elders and chiefs, linking such behavior to premature deaths among the youth, and cautioned against insulting others, which may bring curses or misfortune.
On behalf of the family, Mustapha’s uncle, Sonnie Ali, stated that they have fully apologized and accepted the council’s fine. He clarified that reports of Mustapha’s death were false; the young man is currently hospitalized and receiving treatment for mental and behavioral challenges related to substance abuse. The family pleaded for understanding from Asanteman while committing to comply with the council’s directives.
