How MzGee Survived the Backlash After Taking McBrown’s Seat

Ghanaian broadcaster and media personality, Gloria Akpene Nyarku, popularly known as MzGee, has opened up about the emotional weight she carried after taking over as host of United Showbiz following Nana Ama McBrown’s departure.

Now leading her own program, Just Being Us, on Akwaaba Magic, MzGee used her platform to reflect on how deeply challenging that chapter of her career was, especially as the replacement in a highly popular role that came with massive expectations and scrutiny.

In a reflective Instagram post, MzGee recounted how quickly the media tide turned after her appointment, revealing that the criticism and gossip she endured behind the scenes were far more intense than the public ever knew.

She highlighted one particular segment involving a phone conversation with Bryt TV’s Afia Achiaa Rakia. During that episode, Kumawood actor Big Akwes had been asked to choose which actress he would prefer to marry or date — a seemingly playful game that stirred debates about the limits of entertainment journalism. Though it was intended to be light-hearted, the moment only added fuel to the already burning fire of criticism MzGee faced.

MzGee described that period as one of the most emotionally taxing times of her career, filled with whispers and judgment from insiders in her own industry. The pressure, she said, nearly broke her, but a few powerful female voices stood by her when she needed them most.

She gave heartfelt thanks to media veterans Nana Aba Anamoah, Delay (Deloris Frimpong Manso), and Gifty Anti — women who reached out with words of encouragement that gave her the strength to keep going. Their support, she said, became a turning point in her journey.

Now stronger and more focused, MzGee has made it her mission to be a source of strength for others. In a candid ten-minute video, she shared plans to mentor and support a young female journalist who recently found herself at the center of a media controversy. Her message was clear: women in media must uplift one another in times of trial.
