Kofi Kinaata, a musician from Tarkoradi, has revealed that his focus is on gaining more fans rather than winning awards. He explained that his songs are created for the people and address their problems.
“I don’t eye awards, I eye fans. I look at the problems and release songs to address them. The songs are for the people. I write songs about things going on in their lives.”
When asked to identify his favorite song that resonates with Ghanaians, he said he couldn’t choose one because his fans have surprised him in the past by preferring songs he didn’t expect.
“I don’t have a favorite track because I release an EP and though we had marked certain songs, people preferred other songs.”
Kinaata also mentioned that he doesn’t follow trends when creating music. Even if a particular genre is popular, he sticks to his artistic vision.
“It’s like a pastor speaking in tongues; the spirit of God leads him. When the spirit takes over, the tongues are not yours again… That’s how music is like; the beat comes, and we take over. If it says reggae, we will sing reggae; if it says rap, we will rap.”
Kofi Kinaata recently won Best Reggae/Dancehall Song of the Year at the 2024 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
