Ghanaian musician Kofi Kinaata recently shed light on his distinctive approach to music, emphasizing that he does not follow trends when creating his songs.
Despite the popularity of certain genres like Azonto, Kinaata stays true to his artistic vision, choosing to produce highlife music if that is what he feels inspired to do.
“Even if Azonto is trending and I want to do highlife, I do it,” Kinaata stated, though he acknowledged that trends can be beneficial.
He explained that his music creation process is guided by a spiritual connection, similar to a pastor speaking in tongues. “Doing music is like a pastor speaking in tongues; the spirit of God leads him, hence he sings any genre that comes to mind.”
Kinaata elaborated on this analogy, saying, “It’s like a pastor speaking in tongues; he doesn’t know where the tongues come from, but it has come. When the spirit takes over, the tongues are not yours anymore. That’s how music is; the beat comes and we take over. If the spirit says reggae, we will sing reggae. If it says rap, we will rap.”
Known for his lyrical prowess and versatility, Kofi Kinaata continues to influence the Ghanaian music scene with his unique and spiritually guided approach to music creation.
He recently won Best Reggae/Dancehall Song of the Year at 2024 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
