Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, has confirmed that he has proceeded on a 10-day leave of absence to focus on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary in the Ayawaso East constituency.

Speaking in an interview on Citi FM on Sunday, January 25, 2026, Baba Jamal ignored calls for his resignation from his ambassadorial role, instead stating that his decision to contest the party primary does not conflict with his diplomatic responsibilities.

He stressed that his temporary leave was to allow him to fully engage in the internal party process.

“I have gone on leave, and I do not see why I should resign,” he said, adding that his move continues to be within the bounds of diplomatic and public service regulations.

Baba Jamal further clarified that he would only step down from his current role as high commissioner if he successfully wins the parliamentary seat.

“If I win, then I will step down. But until then, I remain at post,” he said.

The NDC parliamentary primary, scheduled for February 7, is ahead of a March 3 by-election, which became necessary following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama.

Baba Jamal is one of six aspirants who have picked nomination forms to contest the race.

Appealing to party delegates, the former deputy minister urged them to consider his experience and leadership qualities and vote for him.

He has expressed confidence in his ability to bring development and effective representation to the constituency if given the mandate.
