In an illuminating revelation on JoyNews’ Personality Profile, Ghanaian gospel icon Diana Hamilton has shared the surprising story of how she nearly became an architect instead of the nurse and celebrated psalmist the world knows today.
The ‘Adom’ singer revealed that as a student, she possessed a flair for technical drawing and had set her heart on pursuing a career in architecture.
However, a single conversation at her family home changed the trajectory of her life forever, highlighting the deep-seated cultural reverence for elders and spiritual leaders in Ghanaian society.
Hamilton explained that after completing Junior Secondary School (JSS), she had begun the process of convincing her father to let her pursue technical studies. Her ambitions were high, and her skill in draughtsmanship made architecture a natural path.
The dream was abruptly redirected when a respected visitor arrived at their home.
“I was so good at technical drawing. I wanted to go do architecture… I was trying to convince my dad to let me do architecture. Then a lady walked into the house and said, ‘Let her do nursing.’ That was it for my dad. He said, ‘You are going to do nursing,'” Hamilton recalled.
The woman who exerted such influence was the area women’s leader of their church.
Given her father’s immense respect for the leader’s spiritual standing, her word became final.
The singer attributed her father’s decision for her own career to the high esteem in which nurses were held in their family, particularly as her maternal aunt had been a nurse.
Hamilton noted that her story was not unique in her household.
She shared that her sister, who excelled in mathematics, also had the potential to pursue pharmacy or architecture. Instead, she was directed by their father to study Building Technology (BT) simply because an uncle, who was then the high-achieving Head of Feeder Roads, had excelled in that field.
“Because my uncle was doing so well and he was bright… my father said, ‘go do your BT,’ and she did BT,” Hamilton explained.
While the shift from technical drawing to the hospital wards was unexpected, Hamilton has previously spoken about how her health background has been instrumental in her ministry. Today, she is celebrated as a “Nurse-Musician,” often balancing her demanding global touring schedule with her professional duties in healthcare.
The discipline required for technical drawing and the precision of architecture seem to have found a different home in her meticulously produced music and the compassionate care she provides as a health professional.
