Former President John Dramani Mahama has vowed to make the cost of Hajj more affordable for Ghanaian Muslims if he is re-elected as President in 2024. In a Facebook post on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha, Mahama expressed concern over the high cost of the pilgrimage under the current regime, calling it “disheartening”.
Mahama noted that the cost of Hajj was significantly lower during his presidency, at GH¢11,900, compared to the current cost of GH¢75,000. He acknowledged the financial burden this imposes on Muslims who wish to embark on the spiritual journey.
“The current cost of the Hajj pilgrimage is undeniably a significant financial burden, making it challenging for many regular Muslims to embark on this spiritual journey,” he stated.
Mahama assured the Ghanaian Muslim community that he will work tirelessly to make the Hajj pilgrimage more accessible and affordable for all, ensuring that no one is left behind.
He reiterated his commitment to making the pilgrimage more affordable, saying, “I fully understand the significance of the Hajj pilgrimage and the importance of making it accessible to all.”
Mahama’s promise aims to alleviate the financial strain on Muslims and enable more people to fulfill this important religious obligation. His commitment to affordability and accessibility is a welcome gesture for many Ghanaian Muslims.
