The political temperature in Akwatia soared on Tuesday after Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin accused NDC Vice Chairman Chief Sofo Azorka of threatening to kill him.
The confrontation erupted when Afenyo-Markin made an unannounced visit to the NDC’s party office — a move that infuriated local executives, who saw it as a deliberate provocation on the eve of a critical by-election.
Azorka, visibly angered, described the visit as disrespectful and accused the NPP of trying to destabilize NDC supporters. But Afenyo-Markin fired back, alleging that Azorka went beyond verbal outrage and issued a death threat.
He referenced the infamous “Azorka Boys,” claiming the group has a history of violence and intimidation. Despite the alleged threat, the Effutu MP said he would not be cowed and urged his party’s foot soldiers to remain calm and courageous.
He reminded supporters that politics is built on conviction, not fear — invoking the sacrifices of past leaders who endured prison and persecution for their beliefs.
The incident has added fuel to an already tense by-election in Akwatia, where both parties are locked in a fierce battle for control of the constituency. With emotions running high, calls for restraint and accountability are growing louder.
