The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate in the Ayawaso East by-election, Baba Jamal, says his political ambition is driven by service, not personal gain.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, March 3, after casting his vote at the Alhaji Iddrisu House 2 polling station, Mr Jamal stated that his motivation for seeking office is rooted in his desire to serve the people.
“I am not motivated by materialistic things. I am motivated by human service. And that is why I am here to serve my people,” he said.
The NDC candidate referenced his previous tenure as Member of Parliament for Akwatia, expressing confidence in his ability to deliver if given the mandate in Ayawaso East.
“I’ve done it before in Akwatia, and I know I will do it better in East Ayawaso,” he noted, adding that the electoral process so far had been fair.
He appealed to constituents to support his vision of rebuilding and resetting the constituency, stressing that the final outcome rests in the hands of God.
“As I said, God makes kings. So the percentage will be determined by Allah. We have prayed that we should have a high percentage, but it is in the hands of Allah, and Allah will determine it,” he said.
Addressing concerns about the involvement of former NDC member Mohammed Umar Sanda, who is contesting the seat as an independent candidate, Baba Jamal described him as a brother but disagreed with his decision.
“Sanda is our brother, but he’s taking a wrong route. We gave him all the opportunity. Unfortunately, he decided to contest,” he said.
However, he maintained that competition is part of democratic practice and welcomed the contest.
“It is a contest. I’m a democrat, a typical politician and a typical democrat. So I welcome contest. Let him also try. We are all trying and we will see what Allah will do for us,” he added.
