Fifty-two years ago, a group of courageous women lawyers refused to remain silent while the rights of women and girls were denied.

Out of their determination, FIDA-Ghana was born. A movement grounded in justice and sustained by generosity.

These pioneers gave their time, knowledge and commitment, laying the foundation for an organisation that continues to transform lives today.

Building women’s political capacity

From its earliest days, FIDA recognised that justice must extend beyond the courtroom.

Women lawyers organised, trained and educated women to participate in politics, equipping them with skills in communication, public speaking and campaigning.

Whether they won or lost elections, women gained the confidence to stand for office and claim their rightful place in decision-making.

Their generosity of knowledge created lasting gains in democratic participation.

Advocacy in communities

They translated complex legal concepts into everyday language, helping rural communities understand the roots of patriarchy and gender-based violence.

By mediating disputes and addressing violations through the lens of law, they brought justice closer to women and children, proving that giving time and courage yields empowerment.

Tangible gains in everyday life

The impact of their advocacy is visible across Ghana. Women’s rights organisations now influence policy and social norms.

FIDA mobilised resources to train community paralegals including persons with disabilities, women living with HIV and fisherfolk ensuring that justice reached diverse groups.

These paralegals, deeply rooted in their communities, became vital agents of empowerment, showing how generosity builds resilience and justice in everyday life.

Over decades, FIDA has built strong networks with paralegal groups, traditional leaders, faith-based organisations and civil society.

Together, they have advanced women’s rights and strengthened community resilience against violence.

Collaboration itself became an act of generosity, multiplying gains for justice across society.

Give to Gain: The theme in action

As we mark International Women’s Day 2026, we reflect on how FIDA embodies this year’s themes.

Women lawyers gave their time, resources and courage, and society gained empowerment, confidence and justice.

Community paralegals gave tirelessly, guiding others through the justice system and ensuring that rights were not just promised but protected.

Conclusion

We salute the women lawyers whose courage birthed a movement and whose advocacy continues to shape Ghana’s justice and social landscape.

Their legacy reminds us that giving, whether time, knowledge or resources creates lasting gains for generations.

Today, as women speak, lead and challenge injustice, we see the fruits of their vision: a society where generosity fuels justice and justice empowers all.
