The legal team representing Nana Agradaa, who is currently serving a 15-year sentence, has submitted a formal request to transfer her civil defamation trial from Accra to a court in the Eastern Region. The motion is based on challenges linked to transporting her regularly from Nsawam Prison, where she is detained, to attend hearings in the capital.
On July 16, 2025, the defense raised concerns in court that the logistics of moving Agradaa from prison to Accra for every appearance were impractical and disruptive to the trial. They requested that the case be reassigned to a court within a closer jurisdiction to ease these constraints.
However, the opposing counsel, representing gospel musician Empress Gifty, has strongly opposed the idea of relocation. They maintained that Agradaa’s incarceration should not interfere with the progress of the defamation suit. They also clarified that the case in question is purely civil in nature and has no connection to the criminal proceedings that led to her current imprisonment.
The case stems from a GHC20 million defamation claim filed by Empress Gifty in May 2025. According to the lawsuit, Agradaa made deeply offensive and defamatory statements about the singer during a live broadcast, including shocking allegations of immoral and unnatural conduct.
An earlier attempt by Agradaa’s lawyers to have the case thrown out was denied by the Tema High Court in June. The court ruled in favor of continuing the trial and ordered her to pay a cost of GHC6,000 to the plaintiff.
The court has yet to make a final ruling on the venue change request. In the meantime, both parties are preparing for the next legal confrontation, as the civil case proceeds alongside Agradaa’s ongoing sentence for fraud-related crimes.
