The city of Ibadan is mourning the loss of journalist Ojo Peter, who was fatally shot during a robbery along the Molete–Oke Ado corridor on August 18, 2025. The attack, initially mistaken for a health emergency, was later confirmed to be a targeted assault over a cross bag he carried.

Eyewitnesses say Ojo pleaded with the assailants, insisting the bag contained no money. Despite this, he was shot in the back and robbed. His damaged phone was later recovered at the scene, allowing police to contact his family.

Ojo, formerly of Parrot Extra and later Daily Monitor, was widely respected in media circles. His death was formally announced by the Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on September 7, sparking grief across the journalism community.

Police investigations led to the interception of two suspects on a motorcycle near Imolefalafia. One suspect died during a confrontation with officers, while the other was arrested and remains in custody. Authorities say the pair were linked to multiple robberies, including another shooting at Anfani Junction on the same day.

The incident has reignited public concern over rising insecurity in Ibadan, where violent robberies continue to threaten lives. For Ojo Peter, a routine day turned fatal — a stark reminder of the dangers faced by ordinary citizens simply trying to make a living.
