The harrowing experience of 14-year-old Bashariya has ignited outrage across the country, as disturbing revelations of abuse and torture emerge from a household linked to a high-ranking judicial figure.
Originally from violence-stricken Zamfara State, Bashariya and her family sought refuge in an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp located near Gwiwa Eka. In what was presented as a chance for better living conditions, she was reportedly recruited by Fauziya, the wife of serving Sokoto State judge Barrister Abubakar Zaki, for domestic work.
However, the supposed job opportunity turned into a nightmare.
After being relocated to Abuja, the girl endured sustained physical and emotional abuse. Reports from eyewitnesses, including video evidence circulating online, indicate she was denied food, frequently assaulted, and in some instances, burned with fire as punishment.
Her return to her family on June 2 painted a grim picture. Bashariya was found in a state of severe trauma—both mentally and physically—with clear injuries marking her ordeal.
Locals who assisted her after her return claim that the family responsible for the abuse tried to suppress any public exposure. Fauziya is said to have warned the girl’s parents against seeking justice, allegedly invoking her family’s influential status to escape consequences.
The situation has shocked many, especially given that Bashariya had already survived the trauma of conflict and displacement. What was expected to be a chance at stability instead became another chapter of suffering in her young life.
