The accused persons pleaded guilty before the court
The Kade District Court in the Eastern Region has remanded five students of Kade Senior High Technical School (SHTS) in connection with the brutal assault of a teacher, Michael Quayson, during strict invigilation of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The incident, which occurred in 2025, drew widespread condemnation after the students attacked Quayson for enforcing examination rules.
On Wednesday, January 7, 2026, the accused persons pleaded guilty before the court.
Four of the accused, all above 18 years, were remanded into prison custody, while the fifth, a 17-year-old juvenile, was also remanded into police custody.
The juvenile’s case will be transferred to a Juvenile Court, according to a statement from the Ghana Education Service, and all five are scheduled to reappear on January 20, 2026.
In a video shared exclusively to GhanaWeb by the GES, family members and some of the accused broke down in tears as the students were placed in police vehicles and driven away.
Reacting to the development, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Daniel Fenyi, said the ruling underscores the seriousness with which authorities are protecting teachers and safeguarding the integrity of the WASSCE.
“This demonstrates the level at which the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service can go to safeguard and protect the welfare of teachers, and uphold the integrity of the WASSCE,” he stated.
