Ghana’s former finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has been freed from the custody of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
This was confirmed by the legal team of the 67-year-old in a statement issued on April 8, 2026.
It was disclosed that he was released on April 7, 2026, pursuant to judicial order.
“He is home with his family,” the release confirmed, adding that he is fully committed to using due process in defence of his rights as guaranteed under the Constitution and laws of the United States.
It added, “He and his family remain thankful to God and all those who have offered prayers and support during this period. “
Ofori-Atta had been in ICE detention since January 2026 following the revocation of his visa in July 2025.
According to Attorney-General Dominic Ayine, the US gave him up to November 29 to leave the country, which he defied, leading to his arrest on January 6, 2026, after efforts to apprehend him on January 4 failed.
The former Finance Minister has been charged with suspected corruption and corruption-related offences over the SML deal late last year by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
He is facing over 70 charges alongside seven others.
