Ken Ofori-Atta Under Fire: Ghanaians Outraged Over His ‘Best Interest’ Claims”

Published:

Ghanaians have expressed outrage and called for the immediate imprisonment of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta following his recent defense of his actions while in office.

Despite overseeing one of the country’s most severe economic downturns in decades, he has insisted that his decisions were made in the public’s best interest.

During his tenure, Ghana experienced a sharp rise in the cost of living, leaving many citizens struggling financially.

Calls for his resignation came from all corners, including within his own NPP party, yet he remained in office until 2024—widely believed to have been shielded by his familial ties to President Akufo-Addo.

Adding to public frustration were allegations that Ofori-Atta personally profited from Ghana’s mounting debt, as reports suggested he earned fees each time the country borrowed. Under his watch, Ghana’s debt levels reached record highs.

Following the NPP’s loss in the 2024 elections, demands for accountability intensified, with many pushing for corrupt officials to be prosecuted.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor responded by launching investigations into Ofori-Atta, linking him to three corruption-related scandals.

Upon his return to Ghana, the former minister expressed surprise at being under investigation, maintaining that his actions were always in the country’s best interest. However, many Ghanaians remain unconvinced, insisting that those responsible for the economic crisis should face justice.
