In a show of unity, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, who contested Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the NPP’s flagbearer position, has put aside his ambition and joined forces with the winner.
Agyapong, the MP for Assin Central, has been spotted with Dr. Bawumia since the start of his Ashanti Region tour on Monday, June 10.
He was also present at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Wednesday, June 12, as part of the delegation that accompanied Dr. Bawumia to seek the blessing of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
According to Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei Mensah, Agyapong’s presence, along with other former aspirants, demonstrates the unity within the governing party.
“We know with unity, we will prevail as a party,” he emphasized.
This gesture of support from Agyapong and others signals a strong party front ahead of the 2024 elections.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ghana’s ruling political party, has been grappling with internal conflicts and divisions in recent times. The party, known for its historical dominance in the country’s political landscape, has been facing challenges in maintaining unity among its members.
The tensions are reported to have escalated during the party’s flagbearer race, which saw Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerge as the winner. Some supporters of other aspirants, including Kennedy Agyapong and Kwabena Agyapong, have expressed discontent and feelings of marginalization.
The divisions have also been attributed to factionalism, with some members aligning themselves with different interest groups within the party. The perceived dominance of the party’s leadership by a particular faction has led to accusations of nepotism and favoritism.
The internal conflicts have led to public criticisms and jabs among party members, raising concerns about the party’s cohesion and ability to present a united front ahead of the 2024 general elections. Despite efforts to downplay the issues, the divisions have been widely reported in the Ghanaian media.
