Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, has returned to Ghana after a U.S. court ruled against him in a defamation lawsuit filed by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
The Essex County Superior Court in New Jersey ordered Agyapong to pay $18 million in damages for defamatory statements made against Anas.
Upon his arrival at Kotoka International Airport on Thursday, March 27, Agyapong was met by a crowd of loyal supporters who cheered him on despite the legal setback.
The politician and businessman made a brief stop at his campaign headquarters in Shiashie, where he addressed his supporters and reassured them that he remains undeterred by the ruling.
Agyapong described the court’s decision as a challenge that would only make him stronger, emphasizing that speaking the truth and standing up for ordinary citizens often comes with obstacles.
He urged his followers to remain calm, insisting that the judgment would not stop him from continuing his advocacy.
His remarks have fueled further discussions about the case, with some of his supporters viewing the ruling as an unfair attack, while others argue it underscores the need for accountability in public discourse.
The defamation lawsuit stemmed from Agyapong’s public accusations against Anas, particularly in relation to the journalist’s undercover investigations.
For now, it remains unclear whether Agyapong will comply with the court’s order or seek to challenge the ruling through legal means.
However, his response indicates that he is prepared to continue his fight, both politically and in the legal arena.
