The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has successfully elected Hon. Patrick Kwame Frimpong as the Presiding Member.
It comes after his contender, Hon. Ernest Baafour Ofori, the Fante New Town Assembly member, withdrew from the election.
Hon Kwame Frimpong, in the solely contested election on February 26, 2026, garnered 56 votes.
In line with the law, he will chair the Assembly for the next two years.
Failed Elections
Last week, the Assembly failed on two occasions to decide on who assumes the office after the two contestants failed to attain the needed threshold of votes.
Per Section 27 of the Local Governance Act (Act 936), the Presiding Member must be elected by at least two-thirds of Assembly members.
With 66 members in the Assembly currently, a candidate requires a minimum of 44 votes to be elected.
The incumbent, Patrick Kwame Frimpong, secured 35 votes in the first round and 36 votes in the second round, while his contender, Ernest Baffour Ofori, obtained 24 votes in the first round and 23 votes in the second.
