Percival Kofi Akpaloo, the founder and head of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), has been released from EOCO custody after nearly a week in detention.
Akpaloo had been held since September 3 following a dawn operation at his Kumasi home conducted by EOCO’s Surveillance and Asset Recovery Unit, together with its Ashanti Regional Office. His release came after he satisfied the terms of a GH¢10 million bail, including two sureties.
Footage captured by 1957 News shows Akpaloo leaving EOCO’s Accra offices, greeted with hugs and support from family and friends.
The politician suggested his arrest was politically motivated, linking the actions of EOCO to his past criticisms of the government. “They claim it’s an investigation, but everyone knows this is politics. What I previously said appears to have triggered these measures,” he told the press.
Akpaloo is under investigation for allegations of financial misconduct, including fraud, money laundering, causing financial loss to the state, misappropriation of public funds, and falsification of documents. The alleged offences reportedly relate to a commercial dispute involving a private contract.
While bail had been set at GH¢10 million, complications in meeting the required conditions initially delayed his release, keeping him in custody for several days.
The Liberal Party leader now walks free, but the probe into the alleged financial irregularities continues.
