President John Dramani Mahama has ordered a full-scale investigation into allegations of drug trafficking and money laundering at Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
The claims, made by Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South, have raised serious concerns about the security of the country’s main airport.
The MP, who also serves as the Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee, stated that two suspicious flights were linked to illicit activities.
In response, President Mahama has directed the Narcotics Control Commission, the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID), and other relevant agencies to collaborate with Rev. Fordjour to probe the matter thoroughly.
Speaking at a press conference, Rev. Fordjour stressed that he was fulfilling his oversight duties and pledged to provide additional information to support the investigation. He also vowed to hold the Mahama administration accountable, particularly on security issues affecting Ghana.
The allegations have triggered widespread public concern, with many calling for stricter oversight and greater transparency in airport management. The government has assured the public that it will take swift action against any individuals found culpable.
Beyond the immediate investigation, the situation has highlighted the urgent need for enhanced security measures at Ghana’s airports. Experts have called for increased investment in airport security infrastructure, including surveillance systems and personnel training, to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The outcome of this investigation could have far-reaching consequences for Ghana’s international reputation and foreign investment prospects. A transparent and decisive response is crucial to maintaining public trust and demonstrating the government’s commitment to tackling corruption and crime.
As the probe unfolds, all eyes will be on the government, opposition, and security agencies to ensure that justice is served and that KIA remains a secure and reputable gateway to Ghana.
