The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it respects the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Kpandai parliamentary election but maintains its disagreement, as the party awaits the full reasoning of the apex court before deciding whether to seek a review.
Deputy National Elections Director, Dr Rashid Tanko-Computer, made the remarks in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Wednesday, stressing that the party remains committed to following due process.
“NDC is a respecter of the law. We respect the decision of the Supreme Court, but we disagree with the ruling. We are waiting for the reasoning, which will come on the 6th of February, so we can examine the rationale and then decide on the next step, including whether to go in for a review,” he said.
Dr Tanko-Computer argued that the Supreme Court’s decision focused largely on procedural technicalities, rather than the fairness of the election itself.
“The matter borders on technicalities. It is not about the veracity of the declaration that led to the annulment of the election results. The veracity is what matters, not the technical issue we are discussing,” he explained.
He illustrated his point with a vivid analogy: “If somebody stole your goat and he’s caught with it, but you report it late—does it mean the person is not a thief? That’s the point here. When you examine the ruling of the Tamale High Court, you will see that the election was totally rigged,” he said.
The comments follow the Supreme Court’s 4–1 majority decision quashing the Tamale High Court judgment that annulled the Kpandai parliamentary election, citing jurisdictional errors. The ruling restored the mandate of New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate Matthew Nyindam.
The NDC says it will review the full judgment and all legal avenues available to the party before making any decisions.
