Former Trade Minister and Adansi Asokwa MP, KT Hammond, has launched a blistering attack on New Patriotic Party presidential hopefuls who, in his view, flaunt their wealth and insult long-serving party members. Speaking during Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s tour of the Ashanti Region, Hammond accused these aspirants of being “latter-day braggarts” who were absent during the party’s formative years.
He recalled the 1990s, when the NPP was struggling to stay afloat and relied on the sacrifices of committed members to survive. According to Hammond, those now boasting about financial contributions were nowhere to be found when the party needed real support.
Hammond argued that the majority of NPP grassroots members — many of whom are poor — stand firmly behind Dr Bawumia. He warned against turning the primaries into a contest between the rich and the poor, declaring that the party’s future lies with those who built it, not those who enriched themselves through it.
He also emphasized that leadership should be earned through loyalty, humility, and service — not wealth or arrogance. Hammond’s endorsement of Bawumia was both passionate and strategic, positioning the former Vice President as the candidate of the people.
His remarks have stirred debate within the party, highlighting growing tensions between veteran loyalists and newer, wealthier entrants vying for influence ahead of the 2028 elections.
