Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary and presidential aspirant, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has conceded defeat in the party’s presidential primary, offering his full support to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as provisional results pointed to a decisive victory for the former Vice President.
Mr Agyepong’s concession came even before the Electoral Commission completed the official declaration, as results from across the country made the outcome increasingly clear.
Addressing supporters and members of his campaign team, he acknowledged the verdict of party delegates and urged unity behind the presumptive winner.
“We just called the presumptive winner, and we are waiting the official statement from the Electoral Commission, but it’s quite clear that he’s going to have victory,” he said, adding that he had already taken steps to close the chapter on his campaign.
He expressed appreciation to his campaign team, particularly staff at his campaign headquarters, for what he described as their dedication and hard work throughout the contest. “I want to thank you, especially my head office staff, for the amount of work,” he said, noting that politics inevitably produces winners and losers.
Reflecting on the outcome, Mr Agyepong said he was at peace with the decision taken by party members. “I’m comfortable that at the end of the day, the majority of the party have made a decision,” he stated, describing himself as “an eternal optimist” who believes in respecting the collective will of the party.
He called on all party members and supporters to rally behind the flagbearer-elect and prepare for the task ahead. “It’s now time for us to work in harmony, respect for one another, work together and present the best version of ourselves to the Ghanaian people so that we can earn their respect and, in fact, their trust,” Mr Agyepong said.
Looking ahead to the 2028 general election, he warned that the assignment would not be easy, urging the party to put internal contests behind it and focus on rebuilding momentum. “We’ve got about two and a half years to work our way so all of us rally together and put this election behind us and look forward towards 2028,” he added.
Mr Agyepong also praised the conduct of the presidential primary, describing it as a credit to the New Patriotic Party and Ghana’s democratic tradition. He commended the Electoral Commission and security agencies for ensuring a smooth process, despite earlier concerns.
In formally conceding, he congratulated Dr Bawumia and pledged his loyalty going forward. “So once again, my congratulations and congratulations of my campaign team to doctor for a decisive victory, and he can be sure or sure of my fullest support,” he said.
