La Mere Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing maternal health, child welfare, and the holistic well-being of mothers in vulnerable communities, has successfully executed an impactful community outreach program across four key health facilities in Ghana.
This initiative targeted the specific needs of nursing mothers while emphasizing the importance of postnatal care and support.
Collaborating with the Urgent Action Fund, an organization known for its commitment to empowering advocates, groups, and movements advocating for women and girls’ rights, the outreach program aimed to address both immediate and long-term challenges faced by nursing mothers, particularly those navigating financial hardship and social barriers.
The outreach initiative was conducted at several healthcare facilities, including Koforidua Polyclinic, Koforidua Regional Hospital, Achimota Hospital, and LEKMA Hospital.
The program succeeded in reaching a diverse group of nursing mothers, with a focus on those often overlooked due to socioeconomic difficulties.
One senior health official from a participating facility remarked on the significance of such initiatives, stating, “Many nursing mothers delay or completely avoid accessing vital postnatal care due to financial constraints.
This initiative has provided substantial relief to our patients and complements the essential services we offer as a public health institution.”
As part of the outreach, La Mere Foundation distributed essential postnatal care packages, which included items such as baby supplies, nutritional supplements, and educational materials.
Additionally, the foundation alleviated the medical expenses for select mothers identified as facing urgent financial difficulties.
The outreach also featured a detailed health education session led by a qualified health educator. This session provided critical information on postnatal care practices, maternal nutrition, mental health considerations, effective breastfeeding techniques, and general well-being strategies.
Beneficiaries of the program shared their heartfelt gratitude. One nursing mother at Koforidua Regional Hospital stated in a local dialect, “I was seriously thinking of my hospital bills and managing my newborn. Today, I feel a sense of support and encouragement. This program has truly lifted a heavy burden from my shoulders.”
Another participant at Achimota Hospital expressed, “The insights I gained on postnatal care have been invaluable. I now feel equipped to take better care of both my health and my child’s needs.”
In an effort to promote long-term financial stability, a representative from Enterprise Insurance facilitated an informative awareness session.
This presentation emphasised the critical importance of having adequate insurance coverage for both mothers and their children, illustrating how such measures can protect families from unforeseen health-related expenses and promote their overall financial security.
The board chair of La Mere Foundation, Madam Joyce Otiwah, commented on the significance of the initiative: “This outreach shows our unwavering commitment to ensuring that no mother is left behind due to financial or informational barriers. By integrating direct support with educational and strategic partnerships, we aspire to cultivate meaningful and lasting improvements in maternal and child health outcomes.”
La Mere Foundation is dedicated to ongoing collaboration with partners and stakeholders to enhance maternal health services and fortify community resilience across Ghana. The organization’s motto, “We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone,” serves as a guiding principle for its mission to uplift and support mothers in need.
