Ghanaian rapper Medikal is embroiled in a legal dispute with renowned music group Alabaster Box, who has accused him of using their copyrighted material without permission in his latest track, “Welcome to Africa.”
The group claims that the first 10 seconds of Medikal’s song illegally sample elements from their hit song “Akwaaba.”
The legal issue began with a writ of summons filed on April 8, 2025, by Alabaster Box’s legal team, Sustineri Attorneys.
The group asserts that Medikal’s song infringes on their intellectual property and is demanding that it be removed immediately from all streaming and distribution platforms.
They also seek transparency regarding all earnings generated from the song’s release, including any income from marketing, promotion, and performances where the song was featured.
The legal document states that Alabaster Box is demanding a series of actions to resolve the dispute.
These include the immediate withdrawal of the song from all platforms, halting its public performance, and terminating all agreements related to the song’s production and distribution.
The group also insists on a full disclosure of contracts and notifications regarding the termination of any such agreements.
In addition to removing the song from circulation, the group is requesting a detailed breakdown of any revenue made from the song and wants to know the identities of those who may have access to the infringing material.
Alabaster Box has warned that if Medikal does not comply with their demands, they will pursue further legal action.
This could include seeking an injunction to stop all sales, distribution, and performances of the song, as well as asking for the destruction of any remaining copies.
The group is also calling for exemplary damages and full reimbursement of legal expenses related to the case.
Medikal, who has yet to respond publicly to the allegations, now faces the possibility of a prolonged legal battle if the situation is not resolved swiftly.
