On April 26, 2025, rapper Sarkodie’s legal team issued a firm statement refuting claims that he had instructed his lawyers to withdraw from an ongoing legal battle with Ecobank Ghana Ltd.
This clarification followed multiple media outlets reporting that Sarkodie had withdrawn from the lawsuit, a statement his legal representatives categorically denied.
The lawyers emphasized that, according to Ghanaian civil procedure, Sarkodie, as the plaintiff, does not need the defendant’s (Ecobank’s) consent to discontinue the case if the defendant has not yet filed a Statement of Defence.
At the time of the statement, Ecobank had yet to file such a defence, making the claims of a withdrawal inaccurate.
In addition to clearing up the misunderstanding, Sarkodie’s legal team accused the media sources spreading the false information of attempting to influence public opinion and interfere with the judicial process.
They reminded the public that under Section 225 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), spreading misleading information during active legal proceedings with the intent to sway public sentiment is considered a criminal act.
As a result, Sarkodie’s legal team warned that they would take legal action against anyone continuing to spread false reports that could prejudice the court process.
