The Legal Green Association (LGA) has officially launched a scholarship scheme aimed at supporting financially disadvantaged students of the Ghana School of Law, reinforcing its commitment to access, equity, and professional development in legal education.
The event, dubbed “Kumasi Konnect,” marked the Kumasi phase of the scholarship launch, following an earlier unveiling in Accra.
It took place on Saturday, 31st January, 2026, at the Conference Rooms of the Mastercard International Hostel, KNUST, and attracted an impressive cross-section of participants from the legal fraternity, public service, governance institutions, and the student community.
The General Secretary of the Legal Green Association, Emerentiana W. Alatinga, described the scholarship scheme as a landmark initiative in the Association’s history.
She explained that the scheme is designed to address the financial barriers that often hinder deserving students from completing their professional legal education.
According to her, the initiative is not merely about financial aid but about restoring hope, dignity, and opportunity to students who demonstrate commitment and potential.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, currently Ghana’s youngest minister, commended the leadership of LGA for translating advocacy into tangible support for students.
Sharing a deeply personal account, he recounted how the generosity of a good Samaritan once supported his academic journey, enabling him to rise through the ranks of education and ultimately earn doctoral degrees.
He emphasised that his own success fuels his commitment to giving back to society. Many participants were struck by his humility during the event, as he willingly undertook roles that attendees would not ordinarily expect of a minister of his stature.
His conduct, widely admired, was described as a clear demonstration of servant leadership. His leadership is grounded in service rather than status.
The Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Mr. Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, also welcomed the initiative and urged students to pursue their ambitions with discipline, determination, and perseverance.
Drawing from his own life story, he shared how perseverance carried him from modest beginnings as son of a “Booker”. Today, he noted with pride, that same perseverance has enabled him to support the education of many young people.
Captain (Retired) John Kwame Jabari is the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator., described the scholarship scheme as laudable and timely.
He urged members of the Association to remain disciplined, committed to worthy causes, and to ensure prudent and transparent management of the scholarship fund to sustain its long-term impact.
Jackson Bright Kitanya-Dabanyi, representing the LGA Caucus at the SRC, guided the audience through a detailed explanation of the scholarship scheme, outlining the procedures for its implementation and management.
He explained how the application, selection, and disbursement processes would operate, and clarified the overall framework designed to ensure transparency, fairness, and effective administration of the scheme.
His presentation provided participants with a clear understanding of how the system would function to support deserving beneficiaries.
A former SRC President of the Ghana School of Law, Mr. Wonder Victor Kotor, addressed participants on current legal reforms and reflected on his experiences at the Ghana School of Law.
He praised members of the Legal Green Association for their dedication and noted that the Kumasi campus has a tradition of voting based on conviction on competence and other factors.
Citing his own election victory despite his NDC affiliation, he underscored the importance of credibility and performance in leadership.
Other notable dignitaries present included Hon. Comrade Fynn Reagan Emmanuel, Ashanti Regional Director of the National Service Scheme, alongside several figures from public service and civil society.
Delivering the main address, Mr. Festus Matey traced the evolution of the Legal Green Association since its formation in 2022.
He highlighted the Association’s transition from a student political grouping into a policy-driven and development-oriented organization advocating for professional law students.
He outlined key achievements, including LGA’s advocacy that led to the inclusion of professional law students in the Students Loan Trust Fund, its efforts to secure pupillage placements with the Attorney-General’s Office, private law firms, and public-sector legal departments, as well as internship opportunities offered by the Attorney-General to LGA members.
Mr. Matey described the scholarship scheme as the centerpiece of the Association’s current agenda, explaining that it seeks not only to provide financial support but also to strengthen mentorship, professional ethics, and long-term capacity building for committed students.
“Kumasi Konnect” also marked the first major LGA event held outside Accra, signaling the Association’s intention to deepen its footprint across campuses. Leadership reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening LGA’s influence in Kumasi, improving student welfare, and enhancing its future electoral performance on the campus.
In an address, Evans Mawunyo Tsikata, Head of Politics for the Legal Green Association, stressed that member welfare remains paramount.
He assured members that the Association would support those who show genuine interest in leadership, while cautioning aspirants to remain proactive, protect their integrity, and consistently uphold ethical standards.
Overall, the association deemed the launch of the Legal Green Scholarship Scheme through “Kumasi Konnect” as a demonstration of how student-led organisations can meaningfully contribute to educational access, professional development, and national progress.
The success of the programme was a testament to the remarkable dedication of Emmanuel Ansu-Djan, LGA Kumasi Campus Coordinator, and his committed team.
Through advocacy, partnerships, and targeted interventions, the Legal Green Association continues to position itself as a key stakeholder in legal education and student empowerment.
The initiative stands as a powerful reminder that with vision, discipline, and collective effort, student movements can go beyond rhetoric to deliver lasting impact by ensuring that no committed law student is left behind due to financial hardship.
Michael Nana Gyasi conveyed sincere appreciation to the Association’s distinguished dignitaries, including the Honorable Ashanti Regional Minister and the Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, as well as all guests, partners, and participants whose support contributed to the success of the LGA Kumasi Connect.
He emphasised the significance of this support in advancing the Association’s mission, particularly in strengthening the scholarship fund. He also reaffirmed the Association’s dedication to deepening its presence on the Kumasi campus, nurturing meaningful relationships, and sustaining partnerships to help shape a brighter future for all.
