Ghanaian hip-hop and highlife artist Black Kat GH has voiced concerns over the lack of fairness in the country’s music industry, stating that the system heavily favors already established names while sidelining emerging artists.
Speaking during an interview on Opemsuo Radio monitored by News and Vibes, the musician revealed that the industry is not as welcoming to fresh talent as it appears.
He argued that certain musicians have been strategically positioned as legends, making it difficult for newer acts like himself to gain equal recognition and opportunities.
Despite these challenges, he remains confident that as long as he continues creating quality music, listeners will appreciate his craft over time.
Black Kat GH further detailed his struggles while trying to promote his music at various radio stations.
He lamented how the focus during his promotional visits often shifted from his actual songs to inquiries about who produced them.
According to him, the emphasis on producers rather than the quality of the track itself is a major issue within the industry.
He questioned why an artist’s music should be judged based on the producer’s reputation rather than its sound and creativity.
In discussing the recent success of Kumasi’s drill music movement, Black Kat GH acknowledged its impact on the global scene.
However, he pointed out that he had been actively working in that genre long before it gained mainstream recognition.
While he is pleased to see the genre flourishing internationally, he believes that many pioneers, including himself, have not received the same level of attention as the newer wave of artists driving its popularity today.
Despite these obstacles, Black Kat GH remains determined to carve his path in the industry. His dedication to music has already earned him international recognition, with a major milestone being his win at the Taabea Ghana Music Awards UK (GMAUK) in 2023.
At the prestigious event, he was honored with the UK-based Highlife Song of the Year award, proving that perseverance and commitment can still yield success, even in an industry where favoritism plays a significant role.
While acknowledging that breaking through remains a challenge, he encouraged other upcoming artists not to be discouraged but to continue pushing forward, emphasizing that true talent will always find its audience in the long run.
